The Problem Is a Directional Problem
Most identity tools verify the person receiving the call. Two-factor authentication, knowledge-based questions, account PINs — all of it points the same way: the company confirming the customer.
Outbound calls run the other direction. The customer needs to confirm the company. And almost nothing in the standard security stack does that.
The workarounds are weak:
- "Call us back at the main number." Adds friction, loses the customer in a phone tree, and kills conversion on time-sensitive calls.
- "Confirm the last four of your account." This is exactly what a scammer says. It teaches customers the wrong reflex.
- "Check the email we sent." Email is spoofable too, and now you've made a phone call into a two-channel scavenger hunt.
None of these prove anything. They just move the problem.
